There is a relatively new form of virus on the internet today, and it may have infected your computer. This malicious code is known as adware, and it can be a real problem for those who have contracted it. These applications can cause a huge increase in pop up advertisements, change your home page on your internet browser, and send information about your internet usage to third parties. Simply by being proliferate and resource-consuming, these applications can cause decreased performance in your computer. If you think you’ve been infected with a bad case of adware, here are some things you can do to rid yourself of the scourge.
Adware is sometimes easier to detect than its close cousin, spyware. A lot of times, this adware comes bundled with programs you downloaded on purpose. A good example of this might be a file sharing service such as Kazaa. Sometimes people think at first that they might actually want adware on their computer, as evidenced by those who have deliberately installed such adware as Bargain Buddy to help them identify sales on the internet. If this is you, well, maybe you enjoy the increase in pop up ads. If so, proceed no further. If you’ve made a mistake, though, or if you have adware through no (obvious) fault of your own, delete any program in your files that looks like it doesn’t belong there.
Oftentimes, you can go to the Add/Remove section of your computer and be shocked at the number of programs there that you have no memory of downloading. These should usually be removed. While you’re at it, write down company names so you can research them later (but without actually browsing on to their website, which could result in a “relapse”.) Once you’ve removed any of the suspicious programs, you might be in possession of a clean computer. If so, consider yourself lucky - the damage wasn’t that bad. More than likely, however, your attempt to get your computer clean will take some additional steps.
Download and install an adware removal program. There are at least a couple of good ones available, so do your research before purchasing any. Run them to check in all of your files and folders for anything that shouldn’t be there. If you’ve never done this, you could be shocked at what comes up. It’s not uncommon for infected computers to have as many as 1,000 pieces of adware and spyware in their files. Don’t panic. Remove the spyware and get yourself a strong antivirus software with a good pop up blocker to avoid being infected again. Never again download anything from the internet you’re not 100% sure about. Don’t participate in file sharing. And never, ever open an email attachment from someone you don’t know.
